The Elective »Dream Light Space«is a collaborative course with the goal to explore the fusion of artificial intelligence and the world of light installations and projections. This innovative course equips students with the knowledge and skills to design and craft captivating light installations using state-of-the-art AI image generators and creative AI tools.

The primary objective of »Dream Light Space« is to explore the convergence of artificial intelligence and light installations. This elective course aims to provide students with a profound understanding of light principles, while also facilitating creative exploration through AI image generators and tools. Students will develop conceptualisation and design skills for crafting unique light installations and gain practical experience in their realisation. Ethical considerations related to AI in art will also be explored, fostering a holistic perspective on the subject.

Throughout »Dream Light Space« students will engage in hands-on experimentation with AI algorithms to create visual effects for their installations. Collaboration with peers from diverse backgrounds will nurture a multidisciplinary approach to projects, and opportunities to exhibit final installations in the Schauraum of the h_da will provide a platform for sharing the work with a wider audience.

We follow news updates online, with concern and hope. On the other side, we engage in social interaction in social media with family members who may be far away. We feel emotions in interactive media systems (such as virtual and augmented reality), and on-demand entertainment media.

1.      How does  globally connected digital network change emotions?

2.      What influence does the co-constructive online-mediatization have on global digital affect?

3.      Are new digital affect cultures emerging and if so, how can they be characterized?

As these examples and questions show: Emotions and media need to be studied from a wide array of perspectives, each bringing distinctive insights. Based on The Routledge International Handbook of Emotions and Media  (Döveling, Konijn 2021, available online) and highly up-to date-research (Döveling, Robinson, Sommer, Suter 2023) this class discusses latest inter/transdisciplinary research findings on emotions in the digital realm reaching from psychology to sociology and media and communication perspectives.

Assignment: Grounded in little projects that students can choose freely, we will investigate and grasp the multifold areas of emotions and media in different media settings in our digital society: Reflection in presentation and article. We will also look behind the scenes of the ZDF and experience how digitalization changes TV.

The Elective is a collaborative course that focuses on creating an immersive experience on the theme of noise, with the entire class working together as a single group. Depending on the concept there is the possibility to utilize the Schauraum of the h_da in Darmstadt.

Throughout the course, students will explore the concept of noise in various media and contexts, including but not limited to audio, video, visual and performative arts. They will experiment with different techniques and technologies for creating immersive experiences, as well as study the the psychological and cultural implications of noise.

As a single group, students will work together to develop a cohesive concept, which will yield valuable experience in communication, coordination, and collaboration. Each student will have the opportunity to contribute their unique perspective and skillset to the project.

This collaborative approach to the course provides students with a valuable opportunity to develop their teamwork, leadership, and communication skills, which are essential in many professional settings.

Already with the taming of the fire, an artificial source of light entered the life of the still young humanity. Today, in modern societies artificial light sources are ubiquitous. With the emergence of screens we started to spend more and more of our time in front of monitors and lately on our smartphones. These recent developments have changed our lives drastically. All because we learned how to modulate light.

Light exerts a fascination on us, can captivate, distract, and touch us. In this Elective we will question the meaning of light for humankind and translate the insight into artistic work that we will show as part of an exhibition using the very thing we investigate: light.

Hence you will have the chance to take part in the curation and creation of an exhibition utilising your individual background, skills and perspective. There is no specific skillset required to partake in the Elective, however an open mind and a willingness to try out new things is appreciated.
